Water-Efficient Dishwashers For Sustainable Kitchens

When shopping for a dishwasher, you want it to do the job—and be sustainable at the same time. Newer models that meet strict energy and water efficiency standards can help you save money and reduce your household's carbon footprint.

Green Choice ratings look at all aspects of a dishwasher's environmental impact, including its materials and manufacturing, its energy consumption, and what happens to it once it's discarded.

Minimize Water Usage

While you may pour a lot of time into planning your dream kitchen—think farmhouse sinks and marble countertops—it’s also important to consider how sustainable your choice of appliances will be. Dishwashers are among the most energy-consuming kitchen appliances and can have a significant impact on your utility bill. That’s why we rate models based on energy usage and water efficiency, as well as brand reliability and environmental footprint. We also take into account the size of the dishwasher, since bigger machines typically use more raw materials and require more fuel for shipping.

The best dishwashers are efficient and clean the dishes without wasting water or electricity. Depending on the model, they use between one-third and half less water than washing by hand—an estimated 5,000 gallons per year, according to the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC). Look for models that have a soil sensor and eco or energy-saving programs. The sensors help to ensure that the dishwasher is only using the amount of water needed for a successful wash, and the programs run when your dishes are fully loaded so you don’t need to run a full cycle when only a few plates or cups are dirty.

Some models have a separate zone for the dirtiest dishes that need extra cleaning power. They’ll spray in that area for a few seconds to ensure they’re really clean, rather than just partially clean. This feature isn’t available in all models, so be sure to check the specs before you buy.

If you want to go even greener, choose a dishwasher that connects to your home Wi-Fi so you can monitor the appliance’s energy and water usage. Miele’s G 7465 SCVi XXL AutoDos dishwasher, for example, has an energy consumption dashboard that lets you know how much each cycle uses. It also connects to your smart devices so you can control the dishwasher from any location in the house with a smartphone or tablet.

If you want to reduce your household’s carbon footprint even further, skip the heated drying cycle and let the dishes air dry. This will save the most energy, about 25 gallons per load, compared to the NRDC’s estimate of 20 gallons for hand-washing and three gallons for an efficient Energy Star dishwasher.

Look for the Energy Star Label

When shopping for a dishwasher, keep in mind that most energy-efficient models use less energy than their non-efficient counterparts. Moreover, a few cities and states offer tax credits for appliances that meet certain energy efficiency standards. This incentive, combined with the lower operating costs of these dishwashers, can make purchasing an Energy Star model even more affordable.

Dishwashers help conserve water, electricity, and soap because they use about half as much water and one-sixth of the detergent needed to wash a set of dishes by hand. Plus, they clean the dishes more thoroughly than manual washing, and you'll spend significantly less time soaking the items and waiting for them to dry.

The best dishwashers for sustainable kitchens, according to Consumer Reports, will have a low environmental impact, based on how much water and energy they consume during a cycle, as well as the materials they are made of and the way they are manufactured. "Sustainability encompasses minimizing the impact of a product from cradle to grave—including how it's made, used, and disposed of," says Shanika Whitehurst, CR's associate director of product sustainability.

For example, the dishwashers we test for our Green Choice award must excel in a number of categories that assess their rinsability, water usage, energy usage, and even the materials the interior tub is made from. For example, dishwashers with stainless steel tubs are more likely to earn a Green Choice score than those with plastic ones, because stainless steel is easier to recycle.

The Energy Star label, found on the Energy Guide of qualifying appliances, is a great indicator of how efficient an appliance is. The more stars on the label, the higher its efficiency. In addition, look for the CEE Tier rating, which is a similar standard to Energy Star and indicates how efficient a dishwasher is in terms of its water and electrical consumption. Unlike the Energy Star label, this rating is not included on all qualifying appliances. However, many manufacturers list the CEE rating on their website. You can also check with your local utility for up-to-date information on the rebates and other incentives that may be available.

Look for Eco-Friendly Models

One of the best things about a dishwasher is that it uses significantly less energy and water than washing dishes by hand. But the benefits of a dishwasher go well beyond efficiency. For example, eco-friendly models often use less detergent and are designed to leave fewer streaks than traditional dishwashers, which can cut cleaning product consumption by up to half. They may also be made of recycled materials or can be disassembled for recycling at the end of their lifespans.

In addition to reducing water and energy usage, dishwashers with green features can also minimize the impact of the manufacturing process and packaging. For instance, some dishwashers make use of recycled aluminum and plastic in their tubs. And some units incorporate acoustical dampening material during the manufacturing process, which reduces the noise levels to below 65 to 70 decibels, which is comparable to a normal conversation.

The most energy efficient dishwashers are those that earn the ENERGY STAR label. The government-backed label indicates a model’s estimated annual energy cost and water usage based on the manufacturer’s claims. You can find more information about a model’s energy efficiency by looking for the yellow and black EnergyGuide label on its faceplate, which provides high, low, and average estimates for specific energy and water consumption.

More than 900 dishwashers currently on the market earn the ENERGY STAR Most Efficient designation, which is given to those that meet strict energy efficiency guidelines. A full-sized ENERGY STAR dishwasher costs around $35 a year to run and can save up to 3,800 gallons of water over its lifespan.

Many other brands also have eco-friendly dishwashers. For instance, Miele was awarded a Green Product Award for its fully integrated dishwasher, the G 7565 SCVi XXL AutoDos, which boasts energy usage that’s 36% better than the standard recommended by the federal government. Miele’s eco-conscious features include soil sensors, a time delay feature, and an infrared heat sensor that only starts the cycle when the dishwasher is empty.

Other brands, such as Bosch, focus on minimizing the environmental impact of their products from cradle to grave. They recycle 92% of the waste produced by their factories and are constantly striving to improve manufacturing processes. The company has a number of energy-efficient dishwashers that have earned the ENERGY STAR Most Efficient rating and have features like smart fold shelving, automatic detergent detection, and an insulated door. Their DW 18SS31 and DW 18SS4 have an annual energy usage of just 220 kWh and consume only 2.4 gallons of water per cycle.

Look for the WaterSense Label

The EPA’s WaterSense label is similar to the Energy Star certification and assures plumbing product buyers that they are getting high efficiency without sacrificing performance. It’s a voluntary program that aims to make it easier to identify efficient products, as well as to encourage builders to build green homes that meet the WaterSense specifications for new houses.
