Whether you’re installing a new sink or replacing an old one, there are ways to be more sustainable. These affordable everyday steps can help conserve water and reduce your household’s energy use.

Proper Installation

In a kitchen, proper installation and sealing are critical to achieving a sustainable sink. If you’re replacing your old kitchen sink, be sure to carefully inspect the current set-up and take pictures of the current drain location and rim of your existing sink so that you can find a replacement that perfectly matches. This will prevent a frustrating installation project down the road when you discover that your new sink’s drain pipe doesn’t match up with the existing one.

Unless you’re installing a drop-in sink, your next step will be to attach the new sink to your countertops with mounting clips or screws. Once the sink is securely in place, caulk the seams between the sink and the countertops to further protect against leaks, moisture damage, and mold growth.

Water-Efficient Products

The best way to make a sink greener is by choosing eco-friendly materials. Stainless steel is a good choice because it’s not only recyclable, but it lasts generations when properly cared for. Several manufacturers make sinks of this material, including Elkay, which sells a huge selection in every size and style. Other eco-friendly kitchen sink options include fireclay and recycled glass. Fireclay sinks are typically white, but other colors can be obtained through custom painting and a variety of glazes. These sinks can be installed as either drop-in or undermount.

If regulations allow, you can divert greywater from your sink drain outside to a mulch basin or other garden area. The water is then used to irrigate plants and can help reduce irrigation costs and conserve drinking water during droughts. A greywater system requires a large drain underneath the sink, a grease interceptor to trap kitchen scraps, and an exterior pipe to take the waste outside. Their dual-flow kitchen faucet reduces water usage from 2.2 gallons per minute (gpm) to 1.5-1.8 gpm. They also have a toggle button to switch back to 2.2 gpm when needed.

Another company that produces environmentally conscious products is Elkay. Their stainless steel sinks are made with 80% recycled material. They also have a dual-flow faucet that uses less water than traditional models and they are compatible with low-flow showerheads. Their sinks come in a variety of sizes and shapes to suit any space.

Wood sinks are another option for a green kitchen but they are usually made to order and can be pricey. However, they can be a good fit for any space and they can help to earn points toward LEED certification. Some companies that offer wooden sinks include Native Trails and Alfi.

Undermount Sinks

The best choice for kitchen sink caulk is silicone, which is flexible enough to withstand movement, doesn’t crack or peel and is safe to use around food. Silicone is also easy to clean, making it an excellent choice for a kitchen. Choose an acetoxy silicone sealant that is treated with fungicide to increase its anti-microbial properties.
