Eco-Friendly Kitchen Faucet Finishes and Styles

Eco-Friendly Kitchen Faucet Finishes and Styles

The faucet is one of the most used tools in the kitchen, but it can also be a centerpiece that expresses your style. Whether you prefer a single hole faucet, or a set with a dispenser, there is something to suit your style.

PVD, or thin film physical vapor deposition, is the latest space age faucet finish technology. It is extremely hard and scratch-resistant, and resists tarnish and corrosion.

Finishes

The faucet is one of the most used appliances in the kitchen. Not only is it vital for prepping food, cooking, cleaning, and sanitizing, but it also plays an important role in defining the style of your space. As such, it’s essential to choose a finish that is both beautiful and functional.

Stainless steel is a classic choice for kitchen faucets, as it’s durable and easy to maintain. It resists tarnish and scratches, making it a great choice for busy households. However, if you’re looking for something more unique, consider brushed bronze. This finish resembles traditional polished nickel, but it has a soft, satiny sheen that is easier to keep clean than high-shine chrome or nickel.

Brass is another popular finish for faucets, particularly in natural or antique finishes. Some of these finishes are unprotected, which allows them to develop a rich patina over time. This gives them an heirloom quality that adds character and charm to your home. GRAFF offers several living finishes in their Harley collection, including Polished Brass and Brushed Brass. These finishes are also available in the award-winning ARTONA suite, which features an organic body design and complementary bar/prep and soap dispensers.

A newer option for faucet finishes is PVD. This process uses electric current to coat metals such as nickel or chrome over a base metal like brass. These durable, low-reactive finishes have a bright, glossy sheen that brings attention to the faucet’s design and complements both light-colored and dark countertops.

Other faucet finishes include brushed gold, which has been popular in kitchens for many years. Its satiny sheen contrasts beautifully with darker countertops, and it’s easy to clean. Nickel is also enjoying a resurgence as a faucet finish due to advances in metallurgy. It’s now possible to create highly polished or brushed nickel finishes that are scratch and corrosion resistant. Some companies also offer finishes that look similar to bronze but are actually made from zirconium or titanium rather than copper.

Matte black is another faucet finish that has recently gained popularity in modern and contemporary kitchens. Its sleek, minimalist aesthetic pairs well with a wide range of countertops and cabinet colors, as well as other finishes such as brushed bronze, brushed nickel, or a 2-tone look.

Styles

The faucet is one of the most used fixtures in your kitchen, so it’s a perfect place to incorporate an element that reflects your personal style. Whether it’s a bold hue, a metallic finish or a new exotic finish like ombre, you can create an eco-friendly faucet that adds a pop of personality to your space.

Stainless steel is another popular option because it looks modern, has antimicrobial properties and resists corrosion. It’s more durable than chrome, and it can withstand the roughest of use. Stainless steel faucets come in a range of finishes, from satin to high-polished. Matte black is a newer finish that’s been growing in popularity because of its sleek aesthetic and how well it contrasts with nearly any kitchen design style.

Many manufacturers are updating their existing collections or introducing new faucets that feature this trending color. Moen, for example, recently added a matte black option to its Contemporary and Transitional collections. Peerless has introduced a matte black finish to its Parkwood bath collection, as well as a kitchen sink and a freestanding tub.

Bronze is a classic choice that fits farmhouse, transitional and traditional kitchens, but it’s also gaining traction in contemporary and minimalist spaces. Some manufacturers are offering brushed and polished bronze finishes that offer a range of tones, from warm to cool.

For a bolder look, you can opt for oil-rubbed bronze. This finish has a dark and rich appearance that’s similar to antique brass, but it doesn’t tarnish as easily. It’s a little more expensive than chrome or nickel because it takes longer to polish, but it’s an eco-friendly and timeless look that can last for years.

You can also find faucets in brightly colored finishes, including copper and rose gold. These accents can brighten up a modern kitchen and prevent it from feeling too utilitarian. If you’re not ready to go full-on splurge, you can choose a brightly colored pull-down faucet or sprayer that uses LED lights to indicate the water temperature.

Some faucets are given a final coating that combats water spots and is oleophobic, meaning it repels fingerprints. This is a great option if you have kids or tend to be very messy when cooking and cleaning. These special coatings can make your faucet last even longer and help you maintain a beautiful, sustainable kitchen.

Materials

Choosing the right materials and finishes for faucets is important because you will be living with them for quite some time. It is not easy or inexpensive to change them out when design trends change. For that reason, the most sustainable faucets will be made from durable, long-lasting metals and a finish that will hold up well over time.

Stainless steel is one of the most durable and versatile materials for faucets. It can look pragmatic and utilitarian or crisply modern depending on the finish. It can also be plated in gold, silver or platinum for a luxurious touch. However, these are often only available on high-end models.

Brass, which is commonly used for traditional and transitional kitchens, is another long-lasting material that can be plated in various colors. It can tarnish very quickly, though, so it is typically coated in low- or non-reactive metals for durability. The most common is chrome, which tarnishes very slowly and protects the brass beneath it from corrosion. Nickel is another popular finish for brass faucets because it tarnishes even less than chrome.

Another way to reduce tarnishing is by adding a hardener to the brass. This changes the chemical composition of the metal to make it more resistant to acids and salts. Zinc and pewter (a copper alloy with bismuth, antimony, and lead) are also used as hardeners in some faucets.

The most durable and versatile finish is powder coating, which can be applied to metals or plastics. It is resistant to scratches, chips, abrasions, fading and corrosion. It is available in a wide variety of colors and can mimic the textures of stone and other materials.

Electroplating is the traditional method of faucet finishing but it can be prone to flaking and dulling over time. It can also have a greenish tint to it that some consumers don’t like. PVD, or thin film physical vapor deposition is the latest space-age finishing technology that has recently begun to replace electroplating as the standard for faucet finishes. In a PVD process, high levels of heat are used to vaporize the metal and then deposit it on the faucet surface. This method is much more durable than electroplating, but it can still chip and scratch.

Brands

Faucets are one of the most common upgrades during kitchen and bath remodeling projects, so manufacturers are constantly developing new styles and finishes to align with trends. They often use the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show to introduce their latest collections. Here’s a look at some of the fresh faucet designs that debuted this month.

How a faucet is finished makes a big difference in how long it lasts and how sustainable it is. For example, chrome is popular because it’s durable and easy to clean. But high-end faucets use a more eco-friendly, nickel undercoat to cut down on costs and extend the life of the finish. And then they polish the surface by hand to add luster and depth. This process takes a lot of skill and time but it produces the best results for an enduring finish.

Another way to make a faucet more sustainable is to go with a dual-function design that combines both spout and nozzle in one unit. This reduces the number of parts and cuts down on water usage. Some of these designs also feature an auto-shutoff function that turns off the faucet when it senses you’ve finished using it.

In addition to color options like brushed brass and black, many faucets now offer a split finish—a combination of two different colors on the same faucet. Some of these finishes are antimicrobial, reducing bacteria and mold accumulation. Others are oleophobic, repelling fingerprints. These finishes are usually more expensive than a single-color option, but some companies are starting to offer them standard on some of their faucets.

While you’re shopping for a faucet, consider a manufacturer that uses Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) to disclose the full environmental impact of their products over their entire lifecycle. These declarations are a great tool for home renovators to evaluate brands and products before making a purchase. The top five most sustainable kitchen faucet companies based on EPDs include American Standard, Kohler, Hansgrohe, Delta and Moen. They’re all committed to environmental responsibility and have specific sustainability goals in place. They also work with independent organizations to measure and report their progress.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which place should a fridge be located in the kitchen

The refrigerator should be located next to the sink to make it easy for people to access. It should not block traffic, nor be too close or too far from the stove.

Should cabinets be lighter/dimmer than walls?

There are no rules for This. This is a completely personal decision that will depend on your kitchen's style, size, and shape. A general rule of thumb is that dark cabinets can make your kitchen feel smaller, cramped and unorganized. The space will feel brighter and larger if you have lighter cabinets.

For large kitchens, dark cabinets can create a cozy and intimate atmosphere. However, lighter cabinets will keep the space bright and open.

It is up to the homeowner to choose the right cabinet colour and design for their kitchen. Consult a professional designer if you are still uncertain. They can help you make the right decision for your space.

What is the most expensive component of a kitchen remodeling project?

Because the cost of a kitchen remodel can vary widely depending upon the job, it is difficult to give an exact answer. Experts estimate that a high-end kitchen remodel will cost anywhere from $40,000 to $100,000. A major kitchen remodel can be costly. Often, your custom cabinetry is the most expensive part of your kitchen remodel if you're not making any structural changes.

25-35% of the total costs will be covered by custom cabinets. Other potential big-ticket items include countertops, appliances, and flooring. If you have a tight budget you might need to prioritize what parts of the kitchen you want to remodel. But, with careful planning, it is possible to get a luxurious kitchen without breaking the bank.

However, there are ways you can keep your costs down. Instead of focusing on major structural renovations, you can make cosmetic changes. You might choose to refinish cabinets and install countertops, rather than completely gutting your kitchen. To save on labour costs, consider doing some of the work yourself if your project is larger.

No matter your budget, there are ways to make your kitchen remodel more affordable. Strategic planning and strategic choices are key to creating the kitchen of dreams.

What type of kitchen backsplashes are in fashion?

For modern kitchens, a full-height backsplash is the best. If you're looking for something traditional, a subway backsplash will work well. Stone or brick backsplashes are a great choice if you want something rustic. It comes down ultimately to personal preference and what best fits your kitchen.

What countertops look best with white kitchen cabinetry?

A white kitchen allows you to express your creativity with your countertop. Quartz countertops are the new norm now in kitchen design. These are our top choices for quartz countertops to match white kitchens.

  • Concrete grey comes in many shades
  • Bold Granite-like Designs
  • Veiny marble-like designs
  • Bright and striking colours like sunflower yellow or ocean blue

Do you have flooring under your kitchen cabinets?

It's important to have flooring under your kitchen appliances. This will ensure your countertop is at the right counter height.

  • Keep 10 to 25 percent of List 2, depending on the budget. (familyhandyman.com)
